Timber Stand Improvement
Timber Stand Improvement (TSI), or Forest Stand Improvement (FSI), refers to a wide range of treatments designed to steer a tract of forest towards a more desirable composition by removing certain sizes of undesirable species. "Undesirable" is a relative term, but typically refers to more shade-tolerant species, or species with little timber or wildlife value.
There are a variety of state and federal cost-share programs available for landowners. Once enrolled, landowners will walk the land with a DNR forester to develop a written plan. Then, I talk with both the forester and the landowner to fine-tune around the edges talking through all the little details outside the scope of bureaucratic paperwork.Â
The actual work itself involves little more than a chainsaw and a spray bottle to apply herbicide. Work typically takes place between October and March; projects outside of this time frame are not eligible for cost-share programs.Â
