Prairie Management

Prairie management starts with understanding what is already there and what the site wants to be. I look closely at the mix of native and non-native species, how they are arranged across slopes and soils, and how past grazing, haying, or disturbance has shaped what you see today. That applies whether we are working in an older remnant prairie or a newer reconstruction.

From there we build a plan that fits both the plant community and your goals for the land. That might include spot mowing to set back aggressive species without flattening the whole stand, mechanical control in targeted patches, and careful, selective herbicide where it offers the best long-term benefit. The aim is to support the native grasses and forbs you want, while steadily reducing the pressure from problem plants.

I draw on experience in both remnant prairies and prairie reconstructions to think about how your site will change over time. Together we can decide where to be hands-on and where to step back, so your prairie—whether old or newly planted—can move toward a more diverse, resilient community that fits this region and your vision for the property.
